Roy Lichtenstein was a key figure in the American Pop Art movement. Fascinated by popular images, he came up with the idea to paint comic strip style cartoons on canvas, complete with speech bubbles to show characters’ thoughts and letters for noises. He added effects usually found in print – colour blocks, hatching and screentone to create depth and shade.
